I don't mean to be a buzzkill, but this is pretty lame. Most of this money would've been spent in Dearborn wether you had people post it here of not. This is just an excercise of "Hey golly gee, we're blogging about how much we spent in Dearborn one day a month." Big deal.
If you want to make a real difference and show support for local businesses, have people pick two or three businesses and commit to spending $100 there a month. Not just write about where they spent money on one randomly chosen day. Someone spends 99 cents on Starburst that they probably would've bought anyway is supposed to be some sort of victory for local business? $10 at Wendy's? Someone else happens to pick up their laundry today and that's supposed to help Dearborn's economy how? It doesn't.
Like I said, people should pick 2 or 3 businesses a month (that they normally don't always shop at, but that they like) and commit to spending $100 there. That's how you support local businesses and keep local businesses open.
This "$1000 Thursdays" will do as much good as those one-day gas boycotts did a few years ago. In other words, it won't make one bit of difference.
I appreciate that you and everyone here wants to help Dearborn's economy, as I desperately do, but this is just an empty display.
Thanks everyone! We fell short of the $1,000 but of course, this event's concept is barely 1 week old. We will continue to promote it leading up to the 3rd Thursday in April for the next Thousand Buck Thursday. PD, thanks for the sincere thoughts but of course some effort is better than none at all in my opinion. I encourage you to go ahead and organize the promotion you're referring to, send me an email, and I will be happy to support your efforts!
PD, just thought I'd let you know that the purchases that I made, while small (since I am unemployed!) were PURPOSEFULLY made in Dearborn. I visited the bakery and restaurant - never been to either before. I also drove home from Belleville on less than a quarter tank, JUST to fill up in Dearborn.
It did open my eyes as to just how much of my money I'm taking to other cities. I didn't realize how much I just go up to AP to shop! Why? When I have perfectly wonderful Dearborn stores right here!
So, I just wanted you to know that while I'm only 1, it DID affect me and will change my shopping habits.
